Sanding and applying the correct finish will give you the perfect wood floor restoration!

This job was to sand and finish the wood floors in a double lounge and hallway. During the survey it was not possible to view all the areas of the floors required for quotation as there were carpets and furniture still in situ. Uplifting the carpet in each of the corners to assess the type and state of the wood flooring was the most that could be viewed. On close inspection it became apparent that the pine flooring identified was covered with bitumen in places. This indicated that more extensive work than usual and additional sanding belts, would be required to achieve the best results.

The initial visit is not only for inspection but also provides an opportunity to understand the requirements of the customer, the job, to discuss expectations and inform what finish it will be possible to achieve. In this instance, an estimate of the work involved was provided to the customer rather than a specific quotation as it was impossible to view and assess the entire floor area.

In order to assist a customer in visualising the outcome of floor restoration, we apply a variety of finishing options to a test area.

In this particular case a natural finish was compared in both neutral oil and lacquer plus a darker stain as an alternative. This is particularly important in the case of pine floorboards because it is a soft wood prone to uneven moisture levels which can result in a variable finish.

Following the tests and after sharing this knowledge with the customer, a decision was made to apply a neutral lacquer.
