Once the sanding is complete it is essential that the right finish is applied to take into consideration usage and footfall, the specific type of wood, its colour and the environment. Essentially you have two options, applying a lacquer or an oil.

A lacquer is a bit like a modern day varnish and effectively sits on the top of the wood and doesn’t sink in like oil does. A lacquer finish is ideal in a room where you anticipate either high or heavy footfall or where you want a gloss or high gloss finish.

An oiled finish wood flooring provides both a surface protection and a deep penetrating protection. The oil becomes ingrained in the wood. An oiled finish is the perfect solution when you’re looking for a natural, matt looking finish for your wood floor.

At Oakwood we use a unique oil called ‘Magic Oil’ that we believe not only offers excellent protection but also looks better than any other product on the market. It brings out the natural grain colours in the wood.

The advantage of an oil is that you can carry out cleaning and maintenance yourself to enhance the floor’s natural appearance and it is possible for a professional to carry out small repairs and specific sanding of the floor to take out any unforeseen scratches or marks.

A lacquered floor can also be cleaned and maintained but scratches and marks will show up more visibly and you cannot carry out small repairs so the floor would have to be completely re-sanded at a greater expense and inconvenience.

Choosing the correct finishing products will give you a beautiful, hard-wearing and long lasting finish. The incorrect products will deliver inferior results and a shortened lifespan.

Maintenance

Always ensure that you cut to size protective pads for the underneath of all items of furniture to ensure that the floor will not be scratched or damaged. Clear up any spill or dirty mark immediately.
