Have you ripped up your carpets in your home and come across a black covering to your wooden floor boards and wondered what it is?

It’s Asphalt also known as bitumen and was at one stage a sticky, black and highly viscous liquid or semi-solid form of petroleum.

In the 19th and 20th Centuries there was a flurry of entrepreneurial activity involving asphalt/bitumen being used for flooring, paving, damp proofing in buildings, and for waterproofing of various types of pools and baths.

Through our work, we see this on a number of occasions when people ask us to sand and restore their pine floor boards. The asphalt/bitumen comes off very easily through our sanding process.

Due to the fact that the remains of the asphalt/bitumen along with wood dust can be harmful to the environment, this is why we believe in using Pallmann 99.9% dust free equipment to minimize any human exposure.

Please see below for recent pictures of the results ‘before’ and ‘after’ the sanding of pine floor boards and then applying either our Pallmann Magic Oil or lacquer.

Our customer was simply blown away with the results and our ability to transform the floor and bring it back to life. So if you see a black covering to your floor, there is a really good chance that this is the original floor from centuries past and it can always be restored.
