Oak wood floor repair and restoration carried out in a house in Brixham, Devon.

Recently at Oakwood Contracting Services our fully equipped technicians carried out a full wood floor sanding and laquer to a historic wooden floor at Wolborough House in Brixham.

Sanding the Oak Wooden Floor

The sanding of the oak floor was carried out over two days by two technicians. To begin the sanding started at a very low grit. This was to remove the old finish that was very thick and also covered most of the character and look of the natural oak floor. The floor had very heavy indentations from snooker balls as the room is used as a snooker room for guests.

Once we had removed all the indentations and old coatings we proceeded to sand the floor with the Pallmann Spider. The floor was filled up to three times in some areas to get the filler to a consistent level to take away the gaps between the wood blocks. Not only does this give a better appearance it also stops the lacquer seeping between the wood and causing potential problems in the future. If it’s not prepared correctly you may get the lacquer blistering and peeling away from the surface of the wood. Once filled the main area of floor and all edges where fine sanded to remove all sanding marks. This gave a nice smooth finish to allow the primer coats to soak in to give the correct protection.

Oak Wood Floor Finishing

The oak floor was then finished with a 4 coat system to give the floor the best protection and overall finish for the room. We used a Pallman 325 water-based primer. This primer gives the wood a natural look and doesn’t darken the wood as much as traditional finishes or solvent based primers.

Once the primer had time to cure we applied three coats of Pallx 98 Gold ensuring necessary ‘flatting back’ between coats to allow required adhesion. The 98 Gold finish is a commercial grade finish and gives ultimate protection and a beautiful matt sheen to the wooden floor.

Repair to Oak Wood Floor

Recently the wooden floor was accidentally damaged by a snooker ball. Two of our highly skilled technicians attended the large house in Brixham to carry out a repair to the floor. The repair work carried out caused minimal disruption to the snooker room. The dent in the oak flooring was first cleaned out and keyed to allow the Hot melt wax to properly adhere to the floor. Once the area was completely clean three wax shades were mixed together to achieve the colour of the oak. This wax was then applied to the repair and smoothed off to give an almost invisible repair to the floor. Not only does this prevent further problems in the future it also enables peace of mind that any small minor damage can be repaired with no major work needing to be carried out.
